June brings about my first ever series with travel bloggers! These are the amazing people that travel the world and share their stories on their blogs. We network on a weekly basis and I figured it was time for me to showcase them and their blogs in a Q&A series! Be sure to follow my Travel Bloggers Q&A series throughout June!
Hi! My name is Sam De Nike and I am 25 years old. I am from Arizona in the United States but am currently living and working in Spain. I run Sneadler’s Travels where I write about my adventures on the road and look to inspire others to add more travel to their lives.
What is your earliest travel memory?
My earliest travel memory is when I was 4 years old I went and spent the summer in Scotland where my mother’s family is from. I remember spending endless amounts of time outside in the green hills, falling in love with fish and chips and winning a giant Cadbury chocolate bar from a drawing competition. On a sadder note I also vividly remember being hit in the head by my cousin’s toy model train and I still have a scar on my face so I don’t think I will ever forget that memory.
Have you ever cried at the airport?
The only time I can recall crying in the airport was when I was embarking on the trip I detailed above. I remember my dad took us to the airport and I didn’t understand why he wasn’t coming on the airplane with us and I was crying because I didn’t want to leave him behind.
What’s your travel style?
I would say that I live an adventurous lifestyle while I am traveling. I have a passion for the outdoors and all the sports that one can partake in while in the outdoors. I actively seek adventure while I am traveling and a lot of times my travel will be based around specific large or small adventures. I also tend to live quite frugally while on the road. I spend the majority of my time staying either in hostels or in my tent and mostly will cook for myself.
What is your favourite city?
My favorite city…..hmmmmm that’s a tough one…..I have things that I like about almost every city that I have had the opportunity to visit. Like I said before though I love nature and the outdoors so I would choose the mountains or the beach instead of any city.
What is the weirdest thing you carry while travelling?
The weirdest thing I carry while traveling? Since I live out of a backpack most of the time I travel very light and everything that goes with me needs to have a specific purpose. With that being said, the weirdest thing that I probably carry is probably a knee brace and some Tiger Balm haha. If you have never had any knee problems than you are very lucky.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done on holiday?
This would have to be a tie between two amazing adventures that I had last year. The first was cycling 2000km in Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City during June. The second was hiking the 400km John Muir Trail in California in August. Both were amazing (I would be lying if I didn’t say sometimes miserable) adventures that I will never forget.
What do you collect when travelling?
Photos. Living out of a backpack I don’t have the space to collect lots of different things so for me the best thing to collect is memories. I do that by always having my camera with me and documenting my travels so I can look back and reminisce later.
If you could time travel, which era and area would you choose?
I love the life and the era that I live in now so I think I would stay put right here. Travel is so much easier and more accessible now than it has ever been before and am so grateful for that. If I had to choose let’s say I would go back and tell younger Sam not to make a few stupid decisions LOL
Which is your favourite international meal?
Thai food. Cheap, spicy and delicious. Give me any Thai dish and I will be stoked.
What do you miss most about home when you travel?
It sounds cliché but definitely family and friends. Traveling is my favorite thing to do and I have learnt and grown so much from traveling but there are definitely times when you are lonely and homesickness kicks in.
How does travel make you feel?
Alive. Happy. Scared. Nervous. Tired. Hungry. Excited. You take in so many different experiences when you travel (some good, some not so good) and I have definitely felt a wide range of emotions while traveling. Traveling, like life, is a roller coaster of emotions. I have had amazing highs and miserable lows.
Where is the best party scene?
Spain. The nightlife in Spain is crazy and goes all night.
Favourite travel related book?
Into thin Air.
Worst piece of travel advice you’ve received?
People telling me to try and cram a million different destinations into a trip. If you are always on the move from one place to another I think that it takes away each and every place you visit. My advice would be to slow down a little and spend more time in each place you go.
What’s your ritual when you get to a new destination?
I don’t have any specific rituals. I like to relax for a little when I get somewhere new though. Eat some food, maybe drink a tasty local beer.
